2022 West Volusia Veteran Free Roof Winner

Beery Roofing & Redesign’s Free Roof Giveaway Contest ran from Oct. 1 through Oct. 31. All of the qualified nominees’ names were placed in a Beery Roofing & Redesign hat on Veterans Day. After Sean Berry tossed the names in the hat, his son Seth Beery drew the winner. The winner for the 2022 Veterans Day Free Roof Contest was Army veteran Spencer Sparks! Unbeknownst to Spencer, his wife of less than a year, Amy, had nominated him for the contest.

Spencer was born in Orlando, and moved to DeBary when he was 13 years old. He is a graduate of Deltona High School and worked at his stepfather’s air conditioning business in Orange City until he decided to join the Army. The decision came while watching the news on television at his home in 2009. He and his roommate were able to join almost immediately.

Spencer completed basic training and infantry school at Fort Benning in Georgia. After graduation, he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division in Schofield Barracks in Hawaii as his first duty station. His desire has always been to go overseas, and that wish came true in April 2011 when he was sent to the Honaker Miracle Outpost in the Pech River Valley, Afghanistan. His company, comprising three expert level platoons, spent exactly 365 days there. Spencer was then sent back to Schofield Barracks to finish out his service commitment. He was honorably discharged in February 2013.

Spencer returned to his Orange City home and began his college career at Seminole State College, but first received his certification in Emergency Medical Training (EMT). He then went on to pursue his firefighting credentials, followed by his certification as a paramedic, and lastly received a degree in Emergency Medical Services.

He has been employed for the past five years with the Lake Mary Fire Department, and we recently promoted to Engineer Paramedic. That means he drives the fire truck and provides emergency fire suppression. Last August, Spencer decided to return to school at Daytona State to work on an R.N. nursing degree while continuing to be a firefighter.

Spencer still resides in Orange City with his wife Amy. They share a beautiful German Shepherd named Luke, and enjoy tent camping across the country. Spencer also loves to hunt and ride his motorcycle.

Spencer and Amy’s free new roof was installed on Friday, Dec. 9, 2022. This year, Owens Corning donated all of the Owens Corning Duration Shingles. Owens Corning believes in supporting veterans across the country. The Daytona Beach branch of ABC Supply Co. Inc. donated all other materials needed for the roof. Beery Roofing & Redesign will hold another contest in 2023. If you are in need of a roof repair or a new roof, call or text Beery Roofing & Redesign at 386-717-1394.
